The Underwear is one amongst the most loved type of garments by the feminine world. Besides granting a sense of assuredness and comfort, they are able to make a woman feel sexy and at ease in every situation. Despite it all, this type of clothing was frown upon in the past: what for though?

An item both loved and non

Throughout the centuries the underwear was part of the women’s life in a not so constant way and, at least until 1700 it was considered as an uncomfortable garment. Not so known and worn since the dawn of time, the very fist twist in history occurred in 1500, thanks to Caterina de’ Medici, who had the credit for creating the very first types of pants, prerogative of the noblewomen coming from high middle class. The goal of such a piece was to cover the legs of the women during horse riding, so that they could keep their dignity even in such an occasion.

Throughout the years though, the way of conceiving the underwear changes too: from equitation type of garment it becomes weapon of seduction. Until 1700, who was wearing underwear, was considered as a superficial woman and even the church was strongly rejecting such a garment, considered excessive and lustful. Hence the piece of clothing was unwanted from part of the population and loved by the other: two opposed feelings which wrote the history of underwear all the way to us, today.

Not just pants: all there is to know

The pants which entered the houses of people in the 60’s and 70’s in Italy took the name of “slip and, through time, they managed to conquer the world of fashion. If once some of the typologies were considered as very daring, nowadays the available styles are practically endless. Amongst the many ones, it is impossible to miss the “Brazilian pant”, favourite one by teenagers and adult women; this kind has a particular shape in a sense that the bottom side is made out of a triangle and onto this there is a stripe which runs all the way from right to left. The most curious ones wondered about this denomination: the term Brazilian indicates those pieces of clothing used by the “Carioca” women, i.e. from Rio de Janeiro, whom enhance their back side, always without being vulgar.

Another item very appreciated by the women is the g-string even though only a few are aware about the history of such a tiny piece of fabric. Initially, in fact, the g-string was used by men during combats, as a way to protect their own genitalia. With the arrival of the 70’s though, the g-string entered the world of women. Despite at the beginning it was seen as a bold type of garment, the g-string has slowly found its way to every woman’s wardrobe.

Even though the g-string is currently very appreciated, the history of underwear is not as linear as you would expect it to be, isn’t it?
